The Brook 156 project is in the Melrose section of the Bronx. The building is 9 stories with 52 affordable units, 60,000 gross square feet, and was designed by Dattner Architects. Solar panels were installed at the roof level providing the building with renewable energy. Resident amenities include a recreation area, onsite laundry, and a fitness center. The tenants will also get to enjoy a private, fully landscaped, outdoor patio to enjoy on beautiful days.
Challenges to construction included working within a densely populated neighborhood and being shoehorned between existing multi-family housing buildings. Extensive overhead protection was required for the safety of pedestrians, construction workers, and an adjacent 25-car parking lot. An interesting note is that this property once served as an underground railroad tunnel over 100 years ago.
